PCC Report:
Jack Herer, like its namesake, the proclaimed Emperor of Hemp, is legendary in its ability to defy expectations and stigmas. If you haven’t sampled it, you’ve probably heard of it. The award winning cross is reputed to be 50% Haze x 37.5% Northern Lights #5 x 12.5% Skunk#1 and if that sounds familiar it’s probably because those are the same strains used in a number of other big-name crosses (including one of my personal favorites Super Silver Haze). The intention of the breeder was to take full advantage of the incredible sativa effect of the Haze, but to shorten its stature and increase the bud density by combining it with an indica.
With that in mind, I’ll start where I always do: outside the bag looking in. Jack Herer has to be one of the better-looking strains around; often an eighth will be just a single large bud. Testament to the skill of the breeder, these buds do not display the usual airy features of a sativa like Haze, but are nice and tight showcasing the hint of indica it contains. The swollen calyxes and impressive bud structure make your nose itch to catch its scent. As soon as you open the bag your senses are assaulted by the flowery perfume: hints of tropical fruit, a note of spiciness and a delicious smokiness found in many haze varieties. The smell is sharp and intoxicating, forcing the patient to love or hate it - usually the former!
As usual I sample mine in joint form; its dry pull is quite a bit more flavorful than other herbs, echoing the strong scent attributed to it. It is also important to note the ease with which it rolls up. I know how much the cure can play into this, but I think there is still quite a bit of difference even between strains which have been dried and cured to perfection. Some of our more resinous samples create all sorts of footfalls for the unwary roller: Jack does not do this. The ease of preparation and consumption definitely makes for a more pleasant experience, putting me in the right state of mind.
Now on to the good part: Jack Herer’s effect. The onset of the high is vigorous, and can be pretty intense for the first half an hour or so. At this point folks may feel very medicated, but probably in a way they had not expected. Jack’s sativa effect is rare to find, and one reason why Jack is so sought after. It is innervating and mental, picking you up if you need energy and generally uplifting your mood throughout the day. While the physical element of indica is almost undetectable in Jack, it still serves to mitigate and relax the anxiety which can often be found in strong sativas. As a whole, Jack is one of the ideal herbs for day-time consumption; it’s high-functionality lends equally well to being productive or social interaction.
