“What is your strongest medication?”

This is probably the most common question I receive while working behind the counter at Berkeley Patients Care Collective. Patients may ask this for a number of reasons, but usually it is due to tolerance.

Many patients medicate frequently, sometimes several times a day, to get the relief they need. In turn, their body becomes more accustomed to cannabis and they need to consume more medication to get the same effect. This problem can be dealt with in a multitude of ways, from altering your strain selection to taking a respite from cannabis entirely for a few days. None, however, are as quick a fix as simply getting an appropriate concentrate to increase the effectiveness of your medication. Concentrates are exactly how they sound: concentrations of cannabis resin. This means that, by weight, concentrates are significantly stronger than actual cannabis buds because they contain very little non-medicinal plant matter.

Because of their potency they are an ideal addition for any patient struggling with tolerance issues. For this week’s review we’ve decided to flip things around and take a look at a prime example of a concentrate that provides near guaranteed relief: our PCC exclusive, “Kushmills” Triple Double Truffle.

Not just a single strain or concentrate type, the triple double truffle is a house blend of six different strains and the three main concentrate forms: kief, cold water hash, and hash oil products. The amalgamation is not simply thrown together, but carefully constructed and tested in order to achieve a full spectrum of effects. For patients with a climbing tolerance, this results in a medication they can rely on for effectiveness. The sample provided for this review will allow me to judge just how potent the truffle is and whether or not it will be an adequate alternative for me.

Trying the truffle is also an affordable and fun way to test out different types of concentrates without shelling out for entire grams. The current truffle recipe is as follows: Black Dream kief, GDP kief, Headband cold water hash, Sour Diesel cold water hash, Bubbleberry x Haze amber crystals and Jurassic Amber. It’s a mouthful, but all of that can be found on top of the bowl awaiting my sampling.

Wisely, I’ve decided to wait until after much of this review is written before delighting my palate. Unlike the usual strain review, when examining a concentrate we are looking at an entirely different world. In this case, the sample most closely resembles sand interspersed with shards of amber. Larger clumps can be found, typically a sticky mixture of cold water, kief and amber crystals. These differences allow you to pick and choose exactly what part of the blend you’d like to medicate with, effectively tailoring your experience to one that is appropriate. I find this particularly helpful if I need a strong medication but want to retain my daytime focus; in which case, it’s best to avoid the larger more potent pieces of Jurassic Amber, and keep to the mellower kief and hash mix.

For my current sampling I’ve decided to go with an even blend of all components, making sure to have plenty of everything to get the full effect. One of the things I noticed on the onset was how nicely it burned; no flaring up like many kiefs, just a steady melt. It’s taste is also well worth mentioning. Not only is it a mix of many different cannabinoids, but its also a mix of an incredible range of terpenes. The resulting concoction tastes like candy to me: almost overwhelmingly nectarous with a hint of sour to balance it out.

Although pleasing to the senses, it’s not long before I am ambushed by the potency of the truffle. Intensely strong in my mind and body, I find myself medicated to a point I haven’t been in awhile. That is not to say I was in any way overmedicated, however, I find it a rare experience to have such complete relief. From head to toe my body tingled, allowing me to gently doze off. Because of the truffle’s strength, I find it works best as a night-time medication for me, but as I mentioned before, it has its uses in moderation during the day. I highly recommend the truffles for anyone struggling with tolerance issues or simply looking for an effective medication that will ease them in every way possible.
